The Golden Retriever has been catching fish for over 25 years.  I developed the pattern at my fly shop in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and it quickly became a customer favorite.

The fly was originally tied as a smallmouth pattern but we soon learned that the brown trout in Mossy Creek were suckers for it. The fly was in constant demand at the fly shop and my employees and I were kept busy tying them.   I’m still busy tyng the pattern.

New England anglers discovered the pattern sometime around 2010 and, especially in Maine, it has become one of the most  popular streamer patterns for landlocked salmon, brookies and smallmouth.
Besides the standard Retriever a Magnum Retriever is also available and it is great for higher water.
